Canadian Forage & Grassland Association

On-Farm Climate Action Fund

The Canadian Forage and Grassland Association is a voice for all sectors of the forage and grassland industry, from hay and forage producers to those dependent on forage production for their livelihood.

The CFGA has assumed responsibility for distributing funds for the OFCAF Rotational Grazing stream in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Quebec.

Opportunities for funding in the OFCAF portion of, “expanding the adoption of rotational grazing” (as mentioned on the RDAR website, linked above) are for producers like you who are looking to expand or improve their grazing management practices, but could use some funding to help speed things along.

The CFGA has taken a few steps further than what is required to make sure those who have the best, well-planned grazing plans are able to get the funds they need. This includes hosting an Advanced Grazing Systems program that both applicants and mentors can utilize to bolster their knowledge and understanding of what it takes to make a great grazing plan. AGS includes courses as well as different demonstration sites in Canada.

The CFGA OFCAF committee, after receiving lots of feedback from both mentors and applicants, created a standardized grazing plan template which gets you to think about the many moving parts that go into creating such a plan, and to fill out to help you increase your chances of eligibility. Excel spreadsheet pages include creating a grazing chart to getting the financial details of future water and fencing systems.

The requirement to get your application approved is to have it reviewed by a grazing mentor that is local to you in your area. They help you by providing feedback on what you may have missed or must be tweaked to guarantee eligibility and approval by the CFGA OFCAF review committee.

I have helped numerous producers with their grazing plans ever since OFCAF began (since 2023) with outstanding results. If you are in East Central Alberta (covering a large area from Wainwright south to Stettler), I will help you get your next grazing plan approved for funding today!

If eligible, you can apply for funding in either or all three main categories. Each area requires a BMP (best management practice) action plan. These forms guide you on the steps you must take in each area, the equipment and materials needed (and those ineligible for funding), and what is expected upon implementing the plan.

Note that you MUST have a CCA or P.Ag on these applications to show that it has been reviewed and approved before submission.

This is a great time to start with an independent agronomist. The first consultation to determine eligibility is free.
